Korea is bracing for the coldest spell so far this winter as temperatures are expected to drop to as low as minus 17 degrees Celsius next week, contributing to harsh winter weather conditions for the Lunar New Year long weekend, which runs from Saturday to Tuesday.

 

한국이 다음 주 기온이 영하 17도까지 떨어질 것으로 예상되면서, 토요일부터 화요일까지 이어지는 설 연휴에 올 겨울 들어 가장 추운 혹독한 겨울 날씨를 보낼 것으로 보인다.

 

As millions of people are expected to hit the roads to visit their families early Saturday morning, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has warned of difficult driving conditions due to snow and frigid weather.

 

토요일 아침 일찍 수백만 명의 사람들이 가족들을 방문하기 위해 길을 떠날 것으로 예상되는 가운데, 기상청은 눈과 혹한의 날씨로 인해 도로 상황이 어려울 것임을 경고했다.

 

The state weather agency urged drivers to stay safe on the icy highways after snow fell between Thursday night and Friday morning in central inland regions. Though the regions received between one and three centimeters of snow, sub-zero temperatures have prevented it from melting quickly, it said.

 

기상청은 중부 내륙 지역에 목요일 밤부터 금요일 아침 사이에 눈이 내릴 것으로 예정되어 있어, 운전자들에게 빙판길 고속도로에서의 안전을 당부했다. 이 지역에 현재까지 1에서 3센티미터 사이의 눈이 내렸는데 영하의 기온으로 인해 눈이 녹지 못했다고 한다.

 

The KMA predicts that Seoul's temperature will fall as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius on Saturday, and the mercury is expected to dip further in the next few days following an influx of cold air from the northwest accompanied by biting winds.

 

기상청은 토요일 서울의 기온이 영하 10도까지 내려가면서 칼바람을 동반한 북서쪽 찬 공기가 유입되면서 앞으로 며칠 안에 수은주가 더 떨어질 것으로 전망했다.

 

Morning lows on Tuesday, the last day of the long weekend, will plunge to minus 17 degrees, and daytime highs will not rise over minus 10 degrees.

 

긴 연휴의 마지막 날인 화요일 아침 최저기온은 영하 17도까지 곤두박질치겠고, 낮 최고기온도 영하 10도 이상 오르지 않을 것으로 보인다.

 

The KMA is planning to issue a cold wave advisory nationwide on Tuesday. A cold wave advisory is issued when a daily low is expected to fall by 10 degrees or more from the previous day or is three degrees lower than the usual temperature for that time of the year.

 

기상청은 29일 전국에 한파주의보를 발령할 예정이다. 한파주의보는 일 최저기온이 전날보다 10도 이상 떨어지거나 연중 이맘때 평년 기온보다 3도 이상 낮을 때 발령된다.

 

On top of the frigid weather, parts of the nation such as Jeju Island may see heavy snowfall on the last day of the long weekend, possibly damaging farmland and buildings. The authorities also warned of possible travel disruptions for those planning to visit the island via plane or ship.

 

강추위에 더해 제주도 등 전국 일부 지역에는 긴 주말 마지막 날 폭설이 내려 농경지와 건물 등이 피해를 볼 수도 있다. 당국은 또한 비행기나 배를 타고 섬을 방문하려는 사람들의 여행에 차질이 생길 수 있다고 경고했다.
